Solid 100 – 1896-1942 [Although the Dow broke 100 for the first time in the opening days of 1906, it wasn’t until May of 1942 that it finally said goodbye to the double digits.] |
100 to 1,000 – 1942-1982 [After getting within 5 points in 1966, the Dow finally broke 1,000 in 1972. In December of 1982, it passed the mark once again and so far hasn’t looked back.] |
Road to 10,000 – 1982-20?? [On March 29, 1999, the Dow closed at 10,006, marking its 1st crossing of the 10k threshold. On August 27, 2010, the Dow closed at 10,150, making its 34th crossing.] |
Next Stop: 100,000 [Whether we try to reach for the sun too soon or spend a couple of decades hitting our heads against it, whether it is brought about by smoke and mirrors, successive conceptual leaps or a little bit of both, the 20,000’s will only be astounding for so long, for suddenly it will be 40, 60, 80… And 80,000 will be as nebulous as 800 and 8,000… … Or perhaps we’ll go the other direction with it.] |
